hWhat

hwhy? because music beats noise

What the fuck you have the luck to party with the Crookers in a costume duck

cooler couleur, crookers (ft. yelle) (2010)

one of my favorite under-appreciated electro house artists with my favorite wacked out french pop star? i’ll take it.  this lyric is absolutely capital, don’t deny it.

everything i’m looking for, the dirty heads (2008)

i always wish the dirty heads did more of their mellow, island-esque songs. this song’s so fresh and reassuring that i forget that it’s sung by the dirty heads, whose name is oddly suggestive of dandruff. alas.

MAJOR LAZER + LA ROUX —> LAZERPROOF

epic (and free) mixtape. the clarity of la roux meets the chaos of major lazer. it’s genius. click to bask in its glory.

say it’s empathy, mochi beats (2010)

a sharp mashup of rihanna, lupe fiasco, and terra naomi with a backdrop of crystal castles.  absolutely brillz combination of a very disparate set of beats.

this mashup is courtesy of the über skilled dudes over at mochi beats. download say it’s empathy from their website over yonder.

girls and boys in love, the rumble strips (2007)

pure, poppy, peppery indie joy.

the rumble strips (what a fly name) are one of those obscure groups that i sincerely wish got a hundred times as much recognition as they do, because they are nothing short of awesome. their album girls and weather is a bit like edward sharpe & the magnetic zeros mated with nate ruess’ fun. lighthearted guitar strumming with a bit of melodrama.

quequ’un m’a dit: we outta here baby, lil’ wayne (2010)

what’s better than a softly crooned french ballad?

a nice mellow rap on top of said french ballad

—> if you loved the (500) days of summer soundtrack, you will by the transitive property of music also adore (500) days of weezy, a free mixtape by the venerable my sick uncle.

think i wanna die, someone still loves you boris yeltsin (2010)

so revoltingly catchy (and oddly appropriate having just watched Inception).

honestly though, i’ve never quite understood the morbid streak that runs through all these hipster types (is it the rhyming potential of ‘die’? or because weighty topics are fun to throw around lightly like the names of russian presidents?).

bonfires, rosie and me (2010)

this folksy indie group hails from brazil. their ep “bird and whale” is nothing short of frabjous - as sweet and light as aspartame, minus the carcinogenic factor. it harkens back to an earlier, sunnier noah & the whale. (hwhat’s up with everyone and whales these days?)

download bonfires and other songs free on the website (scroll to ‘goodies’)!

basehead, wale (2010)

i’ve often felt that the more prolific the rapper, the better his rapping. wale’s no exception, though it’s unfortunate this song is about baseheads, which are a bit less than glamorous.

hwhat’s that? drugs inspire music? well, i suppose i’m down with it then.
